Goodbye, Mats

Mats Sundin is finished for the season. And potentially as a Maple Leaf. But if this is actually it for Sundin in blue-and-white, what a pathetic way to go.

Being forced to call it a season because of an injury is bad enough. Being hurried out the door by unbearable stench of your team doesn't exactly make for a worthy exit. Its more like an inadvertent escape.

An athlete of Mats Sundin's stature should be able to walk-off into the sunset like a heroes. Instead the club's all-time leading scorer is crawling away. Crawling, while the Leafs' faithful, supposedly unrivaled by its passion and support, seems indifferent. Then again, it's a malaise you can't exactly blame Leafs fans for falling into. Its not like this club has done much to create excitement.

Still, Mats Sundin deserves a better a split with Toronto. Something special. Something memorable.

It all leads me to believe we haven't seen the last of the big swede in Toronto. He could always return next season wearing another NHL sweater. Maybe that will finally ignite Leafsnation?
