It's a start
The elevation of Tyler Bozak and James Reimer from the A won't set the world on fire. It should however light a bit of a spark underneath the stagnant currently occupying 40 Bay. I think this'll be Bozak's one and only trip to the Leafs. If he does what I'm expecting him to, he'll never leave. Again, the more kids the merrier... playoffs be damned.

60 plus, boyz
It's apparent. This team will be fun to watch. It'll also be a frustrating group to follow if it doesn't have enough in the tank to push for better through the latter portion of the game. They came out like world beaters, they closed out a beaten bunch. Hey, OT's get wacky, but the Leafs have to sense things are slipping towards the unpredictable and CALM IT DOWN. It's a crucial and necessary part of earning those extra points. They didn't do it on opening night, lost, with a point for effort, but must now move onto thinking of an upset in Washington. Hey, why not? It's a possibility with this team. Really, after just one game, 60 plus minutes, the ups, the downs, it's all possible in Toronto this season. Strap in folks, and prepare for just about anything.
Stars:
Price
Stajan
Metropolit (I grew up with the guy in Regent)
Jars:
Toskala
Gomez
Schenn
*I still can't wait until Tyler Bozak and Vik Stalberg are working together again. I think they were meant for each other.
*Kadri opened the scoring for the Knights in Sarnia on Thursday. London beat the Sting 4-3. The Leafs 7th overall pick in June is shooting for 100 points in Junior this season. More with Naz on "The Hook with Norman James", Friday, 8PM at http://am980.ca/.

Gimme da Bozak
BOZAK WON'T BE IN THE LINE-UP THURSDAY NIGHT. THE LEAFS ARE SALARY CAPPED. GREAT.
While I don't like Vesa Toskala starting for the Leafs... I wish the Leafs would've started with Tyler Bozak in the line-up. While Vik Stalberg stole the preseason show I believe it'll be Bozak who swipes the most points and praise over the course of the regular season. The University of Denver standout has the most complete game of the Leafs' kids (even Stalberg), as pointed out by master puppeteer, Julian Sanchez of http://pensionplanpuppets.com/ on last Saturday's edition of the radio show http://am980.ca/media/?id=cfplam&category=The. I not only concur, I think Tybo puts himself in the mix for a calder when all is said and done. He appears to me an above average play maker. The type of guy already boasting NHL skills and smarts. Of course, he'll have to get adequate playing time from Ron Wilson, which will depend greatly on his early output.
So here's hoping Bozak makes the most of his opportunity with the Leafs. And here's my money.. because I'm betting on it.

Hockey notes
Daniel Erlich opens the scoring on the Knights OHL season. It was a winning opener, 4-2 over the Spitfires. Poor Josh Unice. He looked yuck. Anyway, of all the recent Hunter player moves the signing of Dany is my favourite. It's so great to see a guy of his stature and heart live a dream. Making the OHL is a big deal. Being a star in this league is a bigger one. Before he passes on his Knights jersey I believe Daniel Erlich will have accomplished both.
Congrats to Michael Houser. He's a back-up keeper who should keep Friday's experience at JLC close to his heart for the rest of his life. Houser got the call to start against the Spits, and won. He stopped 42 shots for his first OHL victory in his first OHL game. We did a piece on him on the TV side of things. He's a class kid and says he doesn't mind playing the support role. Hope he's serious about that. The Hunter's are going to play the crap out of Michael Hutchinson who's just returned from Bruins camp. And that's not entirely a bad thing. Hey, they paid a steep price to get him and don't like not getting a return on their investment. Just ask those associated with the Eurocan Cup.
Yikes! Two 1st's and a 2nd for a guy with a bum shoulder? Well, it's not exactly that. Phil Kessel is a super talent with youth and even more upside. Yeah, he's recovering from surgery, but I doubt for a second Brian Burke makes that deal if he feels he's getting a lemon. At 21, Kessel's essentially a 'didn't miss' first rounder dealt for picks that may or may not turn out. The gamble is part of the fun for BB, especially with those high valued blue and white chips. So much for that rebuild idea pushed along by the media. It's no rebuild, but the retooling is in high gear with the aim of getting the Leafs into the playoffs next Spring, then deep into them a year later. Wonder if there'll be any money left in the kitty for that sniper out of Atlanta? If BB really wants to impress, he should be shaping a roster for the eventual topping off with the cherry that could be Ilya Kovalchuk. The defence appears built. Kessel this year. Kovalchuk next. The offence could be next. To this point though I do like what Burke has done. I especially pleased with the signing Tyler Bozak. I think he's ready, to play in the NHL, to have an impact.
James Reimer, looking solid between the pipes this camp. He'll share time with Joey MacDonald in the "A". Well, when MacDonald isn't backing up whichever of the Fin/Swede combo isn't injured that week.
And I'm quietly rooting for Jason Allison to make the Leafs. I know it's a long shot, but I'm intrigued by his. He's been out of the game over 1,200 days, yet there he is, back on the ice with a bunch of guys who are more talented and much faster than those he last played with 3 seasons ago. Hey, 2 points for "Alli" on Friday night. Say what you will about the portable refrigerator he skates around with on his back, the ex-Knight still has a set of soft hands.

Soaring expectations
A "Monster" signing and already monster expectations are back on the world's most scrutinized hockey club. It's nothing new (the spotlight), except for this idea the Leafs might actually be good soon. Yes, BB's moves have been positive (Bozak, Bozak, Bozak) bringing with them reason for optimism and excitement, but stay cautious, my friends. When and if this team finally wins a championship it'll contain many more pivotal pieces than just those in play today.
It's been what, 5 years since the Leafs last qualified for April play? If the weak streak's broken next Spring, so be it. If not, not to worry. As fans, supporters, worshipers, whackos and even you jackos, we've trudged through enough mud with this team to believe smooth sailing is on the immediate horizon. But what we can finally and clearly navigate is that the process towards 'betterness' is well upon us. For the first time in years Big Blue is moving forward, one smart step in the right direction at a time. Just enjoy the journey again. You deserve it.

The Leafs got it: The Bozak
I'm a CHL kinda guy, but when you can pluck the best from the NCAA and at the peril of the Sens and Habs...now that's what I'm talkin' bout.

Newest Leaf, Tyler Bozak
Smart choice, young lad. The Leafs are the biggest team in hockey, and dead serious on the future. I'm tellin' ya, that combination is refreshing for Leafnation and pretty scary for the rest of the league. In honour of Bozak agreeing to terms with the NHL's number one and most important provider, I present you with a classic:
Don't bet against BB pulling off the treble. Hanson, Bozak...Gilroy? Ah, now we're getting greedy and that's perfectly fine by me.
