The grass must be greener

Its funny to think of just how many former 'players' involved in Toronto's long-running tragic hockey comedy have miraculously found refuge, and quick.

Like Paul Maurice - When Uncle Cliff let him go last spring, a new job seemed hopeless. Yet here we are less than a year later and he's guiding one of the hottest teams in the league into the playoffs. What's old is new again and its working in Carolina, unlike Toronto.

JFJ - The guy who contributed greatly to running this once great franchise deep, deep into the ground is in a more suitable role as top scout for the San Jose Sharks. Imagine going from goat (scapegoat) to Stanley Cup winner? Its possible for the much maligned Fergie, and in a way I'm happy for him...that bastard.

Bryan McCabe - Another fall guy for our troubles only to rise into a position of importance on a team still alive for a spot in the dance. Even if McCabe and the Panthers don't make the playoffs this Spring, I believe they'll be there next (with or without JB). Can the Leafs can say the same?

Steen and Colaiacovo - No sure thing with St. Louis, but they're in the fight. Colaiacovo has 30 points from the Blues' line. Man, what gives?

Oh yeah, the Bromma Bull - For the most part victorious in Vancouver. 26 points in 30 some odd games ain't great, but he's going to the playoffs...along with Kyle Wellwood and in front of a guy who could very well lead them to the SCF himself. Mats and Wellwood could also offer up postseason impact while getting a chance at something now totally foreign to Leafs' players and fans.

Nik Antropov - Could get there with the Rangers as long as the Panthers don't. Again, he like many of his former mates is smelling the postseason. Must be nice.

Hard to believe so many former pieces of Toronto's ongoing ineptitude could find almost immediate success elsewhere. So what does that say? Were they really the problem? Or is it program? The environment? That debate will rage until the Leafs finally hoist the cup. What's clear: to get in you have to get out. All things considered, I wouldn't have it any other way.
