84 to get

...thanks to 91 and his vicious little shot.

I'll admit, seeing the Leafs at the top of the table is nice. Of course, it's almost certainly temporary, but a man can bask in the moment, can't he?

Two ways to look at that Islanders game:

1) Great compete
2) Still not enough

Are the Leafs still one of those teams?

Still not talented enough to overcome the dominance of an out-of-his-mind goaltender? If so, we could be witness to many more nights like Monday's versus the Islanders. Now, if the end result is at least a point in overtime or the breakaway bonanza it might lessen the frustration, but any correlation with last season is troublesome. And no doubt the Leafs being locked out by a hot keeper and/or their very own unwillingness to crash the net is reminiscent of shittier times.

The Leafs had their chances, they just couldn't make the most of them. But to advance, in both body and mind, they're going to have to make good more often than not. You know, like the better teams do. Until then, until we see appreciable change in play, and ultimately in the standings, we cannot believe that their past failings won't affect what lies ahead.
