That was crappy

I wouldn't be surprised if the Leafs winless streak runs into next week. I'm not suggesting they all of a sudden stink, but they've just suggested, issues new and old, continue to permeate.

The preseason sentiment was that the Leafs would have trouble scoring. After a blazing start, that idea has become a cold hard fact, thanks in part to an anemic offensive punch 5-on-5, and now on the powerplay. Great. It's quickly reminding us of last season's confused and unproductive ways. Not sayin' they're for real or lasting. But there they are, again.

And the trip down memory lane continues...

Mikhail Grabovski can still sum up a whole lot of energy and produce a whole lot of nothing. So much speed, a bit of dazzle, but little finish. It's frustrating to watch.

Kris Versteeg: the new snake bitten Leaf. Isn't there one, or a few, every season? Had Versteeg buried his breakaways against the Rangers and the Islanders the Leafs could still be undefeated tonight. Of course, woulda coulda shoulda, but the talented forward was brought in to score. And those weren't just scoring opportunities, they were bloody breakaways! With the game on the line he's got to come through. Early, late, or at any point of a season. He may have been a periphery player in Chicago, but he's front and centre in Toronto. That said, let's give Kris Versteeg a bit of a break. He's holding the stick a little too tight at the moment. Things should come around for him, we hope.

But...

if the Leafs can't break back out in Philadelphia on Saturday Versteeg might not be the only one forcing it, and if still riding a losing streak this time next week, skating on egg shells. Now that would be crappy.
