Be honest.
A simple win hasn't felt this good in a while.
No doubt, amazing.
But categorizing Saturday's surprising Leafs triumph over the Bruins as typical or uninteresting would be irresponsible and inaccurate. It was, simply put, HUGE. A delightful, refreshing, desperately sought conclusion to a miserable week... err... weeks of faith shaking failures. It was the mother of all thunderstorms smack dab in the middle of a summer of drought, just when you thought it was going to pass, again. Not this time.
And let me confess something. I watched that late goal and the winning shootout about 5 times on Sunday. Man, exhilarating. You could see it on the players faces. The fans too. Glory and happiness so bloody rare I had to immerse myself in it, as if the next equally euphoric moment is in some far off distant land that I'll probably run out of gas before I get to. Based on this season's unfortunate reality, that empty scenario is likely the one to be playing out over the next few months. So, fuck it. I got my fill... and thrill. Hey, taking what you can get when you can get it is part of life in this big, battered and bruised nation occupied by Leafs people.
A quick criticism
WTF was Clarke MacArther shooting at in those dying seconds? Are you to tell me he meant to bank it off the end boards to Kris Versteeg? Bullshit. No wonder the Leafs can't score. If they'd connect on just half of those errant shots their goal count would have no choice but to go up.
On that topic
The Leafs did you pretty well against Boston on Saturday. Better than most people know, at least around here. They actually beat the Bruins, oh... a half dozen times, so far. It was a win of hockey-heroic fashion. The kind of stuff the Leafs used to pull off on any given weekend. Do you know what else Saturday's game was? A nice reminder of those great days gone by, and how times of changed. Yes, the big chest pounding, cup dreaming moments still come around. They always do. But for the Leafs of today, and especially their followers, these particular triumphs aren't designed to be taken for granted anymore.
They are gifts from the generous, charitable, merciful, and they are meant to be savoured. Don't forget it.
If you don't have one, get a PVR.
