I'll never forget

...the image of a hobbled, hurting Michael Faulds coming out for one final toss on his illustrious university football career. It went incomplete. But that moment, the attempt, the possibility capped off just about as complete a body of work as we'll ever have the pleasure of witnessing in the Canadian university game. Complete with many well deserved accolades and truly magical memories. That final act, perhaps the most complete of them all. Completely touching, inspiring, amazing and never to be forgotten.

Now here's to the Hec for one Heck of a player.

The Gaels' offensive line won that game. Mustangs' blunders lost it. That early pick, that safety, and Wheeler's rare miss all contributing to a much, much longer bus ride home. But folks, it's the sick beauty of football and sports: someone's heart must be broken.

Da Hook Update

A "best of" edition of my radio show has been on the AM980 airwaves the past few Saturdays. Word is Craig Needles will man the desk this coming Saturday while I'm in Kingston for the big Yates Cup showdown. I'll be joining Craig live via the phone on AM980 directly after I've put together my postgame wrap for /A\ News. Catch me on both the radio and the tee-vee this Saturday. I'll be back in business in Da Chair on Da Hook doing my thang with a new sponsor in tow, Western Fair Raceway, Friday November 20th.

Getting it done

Michael Faulds' knee isn't 100 percent. But who and what is at this point of the season? I said Stangs by 10 over Guelph. Ah, 19 is just as good...and in that nasty TDW wind? Impressive. Huge Defence. Nathan Riva big time, 171 yards, 25 carries. Steady Faulds, of course. Even a chip in courtesy of the coach's kid, Donnie Marshall. It's how it has to be done when the season is on the line. More to do now.

Heck, I think Western is the favourite at Laurier November 7th. If the Goldenhawks are to win, it won't be easy for'em. We'll be there to witness whatever happens.

Check out this beauty from /A\ News London.. Canada's greatest University QB getting his fill:

Marek Sutherland was in on this. Watch /A\ News London Sports for Stangs, Knights, just about everything. 6:50pm, 11:25 pm Monday to Friday, 6:25pm, 11:25 Saturday and Sunday.

Da Hook tonight

Michael Faulds chases the All-time passing record. But he's not feeling 100 percent. Shouldn't he be resting for the playoffs instead? We'll talk about it with Mustangs' linebacker, John Surla. Big John.

After 9 -- Manchester United v. Liverpool. The greatest all-time? Mike Boothman and Ian Clarke drop by the program to weigh in.

Tomorrow -- We'll break down the Blues and Stangs, size up the OUA football playoff picture and have a convo with former NHL official, Ray Scapinello. Scampy lives in Guelph these days. What else is he doing? Find out.. AND local guy, dual lacrosse champion, Scott Carnegie on Da Hook.

Leafs in a shootout

...so says Mike Augello. It's gotta happen sometime, right?

Thanks to Craig Needles, Mike and Ryan Gauss for their availability tonight. My Hat's off to the Queen's Gaels for getting it done when it counted. The Gaels, 27-26 winners over their rivals from Western securing 1st place in the OUA and a first round playoff bye. Danny Brannagan, you truly are the game's best. As well, Mike Faulds. He's in the conversation for Canada's best university QB and proved again why this afternoon in Kingston. He's a great guy, great quarterback, Western's greatest for sure. He showed guts coming back from a knee injury in the second half leading the Stangs to within a minute of a win over mighty Queen's. Mike, it's a pleasure watching you play. Get healthy so we can see more.

Ryan Gauss, do you really want to sell London City? If not, why even bother announcing that you do? That organization is in you, man. Step back and make something good happen. For yourself, the club, the city...and your father.

J-Ho, you da man. Listen to Da Hook next week..

Stangs by a field goal

Gotta feelin' the defence will have it's day in Queen's. Gotta say though, the Gaels are a confidence bunch, smelling blood running from what they perceive is a wounded animal out of London. TJ Leeper, Gaels linebacker and Lucas grad says games mean just a bit more to him when they're against the Mustangs. He told me so on the radio show Friday. Michael Faulds wants to have fun Saturday afternoon. He should. Not just because he'll most likely surpass the 10,000 yard passing plateau at Richardson Stadium, but it'll be his second last OUA regular season game. He's finished when the 2009 campaign concludes. Enjoy these times he must. They're almost over. The question is: when does the 2009 campaign conclude for Mike and Mustangs? Two weeks from today? Or November 28th in Quebec City? We got both sides of the Western/Queen's debate Friday on the Hook. Thanks to TJ and Mike for their time.

My favourite OHL'er is Ryan Ellis. Not just because he joined us on the program, but because he's a whale of a player. He says it was a "told ya so" type of moment for him when he walked the stage in Montreal this past June as the 11th overall pick in the NHL draft. He's 5-foot-nothing, but carries a big stick. That's why he's the best powerplay point man in the Junior game. We'll bare witness again this Christmas when he's terrorizing the World Junior tournament for the second straight year. This time he's old enough not to be wearing a cage. Ryan's out with an injury right now. When he gets back into the Spitfires line-up he'll most likely be joined by Kenny Ryan, who has left Boston College to play in the OHL, and whomever Spits' management can bring back in a deal for disgruntled defenceman, Jesse Blacker. Ryan and Blacker are both Leafs second round picks.

Thanks to Dave Blackwell and the crew from the Southwestern Ontario Women's charity cashspiel. We learned Friday on Da Hook that their event has grown leaps and bounds since it's beginning 13 years back. Future olympians are even part of the draws this time around. Bingyu Wang of China is here. Wang is also the reigning World Women's curling champion. Mirjam Ott of Switzerland is competing in the cashspiel this fall. The Ott rink has been touring Canada the past few weeks getting used to the Canadian game, if you will. It's all in preparation for 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Both Ott and Wang will be there.

Love the chats with J-Ho. Lot's of fun. Zipperboots, Fords, Wrestling costumes and turkey carcasses. You've gotta listen to learn WTF I'm talkin' 'bout.

Da Hook's on again Saturday night... 5:30. I've got Craig Needles, Mike Augello and Ryan Gauss dropping by. We'll break down the Stangs and Gaels, preview tonight's 7th straight Leafs loss and talk London City Soccer. Is the thing up for sale or what?

Peace.

The Math

Stangs' QB, Michael Faulds is expected to have a big night against York...

The numbers are as follows:

347 - yards to break Ben Chapdelaine's OUA passing record

372 - yards to 10,000 for his career

827 - yards from equalling Matt Connell's all-time CIS mark

??? - yards Mike might throw for tonight

Breaking some big marks would be nice for the first class pivot, but one of those feel-good-about-ourselves type of wins would be nicer. We shall see what happens? Really tho, the Stangs need to feel good about themselves again, and tonight would be the perfect time to start. It could also get worse. It's up to them. But the Queen's game looms, a psychological milestone for both clubs.

/A\ News Sports is live tonight from TD Waterhouse Stadium.

Mickey Donovan is on Da Hook this Saturday, 5:30 pm at http://am980.ca/

Show me da tix

I love giving stuff away. Congrats to Rob White. He listened to the Hook and won tickets to tomorrow's Redskins/Lions game, the 20th straight loss for the Detroit footballers.

Thanks to Charles Patterson, friend of the Hook.

As well...

Shoutouts to Mickey Donovan, Julian Sanchez and Daniel Erlich. All stopped by the show on Saturday.

Donovan was there, in Guelph, for Saturday afternoon's soon-to-be legendary showdown between the Stangs and Gryph's. Western won by the skin of it's teeth. Check the highlights somewhere, anywhere. Trailing by a point, Michael Faulds loses the handle on the ball with seconds to go, only to have Nathan Riva recover it. That set up Darryl Wheeler's game winning field goal. Riva guested on the program on Friday. So did Justin Dunk, Guelph's superstar QB who looked like he was ready to jump off a bridge at the end of Saturday's affair. You could feel his hurt. He thought he had it. What was almost his first win over those bastards from Western in over two years became yet another defeat at their dirty hands, and one that stings even more considering his Gryphons had game in their favour until that final, awful second.

Oh well, there's a winner and a loser in just about everything we do. Guelph should be proud of it's efforts on Saturday. And hey, if it plays like that over the final 4 games of the regular season, 3 wins are probable. Then so is a berth in the playoffs where revenge and yet another crack at the mighty Mustangs can be had.

Dunk - A Quarterback, had more yards rushing than anyone on the field.
Faulds - A legend, broke the OUA record for completions.
McCory - A linebacker, actually scored a touchdown

With Dunk at the helm, Guelph's last win over Western, 31-17 on Sept 22, 2007 at TDW Stadium (Week 4 of the season). The two clubs would meet again later that fall in the Yates Cup.

Here's hoping

... for a good game between old rivals, Mike Faulds and Justin Dunk. Faulds might be the better brain, Dunk the better body. I think the CFL would be better off with both of them. Oops! There I go dreamin' again.

Nathan Riva, Dunk and Mike Hayes joined me on the radio show Friday as we again celebrated all things local football. We also speculated on Nazem Kadri's future, again. We talked, he scored...again. I still believe he should spend another season with the Knights.

Leafs looked good in Detroit. 5-4 viktors in the breakaway bonanza. The kids, man... the kids. Vikor Stalburg is the fastest guy on the ice, already. And that John Mitchell is something else. He's one of the smartest players on the ice, already. His shootout winner appeared too easy. But that's the skill talkin'.

Kudos to Mike Hutchinson. His 34 save shutout, his first win, first goose egg as a Knight. London 3-0 winners over Mississauga.

Roy Halladay, thanks for the memories. Congrats on the great finish in Toronto. Congrats on the possibilities, finally, that lie ahead for you.

Listen to the Hook Saturday, 5:30 for your chance to win Detroit Lions tickets. We're giving away a pair of tix to Sunday's game at Ford Field. Keep these digits handy: 1 866 354 8255. If you wanna win'em you'll need'em.

Peace.

Hec, he belongs in the CFL!

Once Michael Faulds is done leading the Western Mustangs to the Vanier Cup, how about the guy gets a tryout, or something, with a Canadian Football League team? He's not from the States so it's a long shot.. but he deserves a shot, none the less. Mike expressed his desire to be given at least a sniff from one of the "elite 8" when his CIS playing days are over. And the clock is ticking.

We replayed part of Friday's Faulds interview on Saturday. It was a perfect lead-in to our segment with cisblog.ca's Andrew Bucholtz.

Andrew thinks Faulds' Mustangs is the team to beat in 2009.. and believes the only team capable of doing that resides where he's currently being edgeamacated, Kingston. Yes, according to Andrew, Danny Brannagan and the Gaels will upset Faulds and the number one ranked Stangs later this fall. Really? Hmmm....? Well, guess we've gotta take the guy's word for it. He follows CIS Football closely and wisely... and of course he wouldn't have been on the show if we didn't respect his opinion. It's great to connect with people like Andrew who eat, sleep and breathe university sports. That's Canadian university sports, Thank you very much.

I think Western gets out of Ottawa tomorrow with a 15 point win. After that, we'll see? As Michael Faulds said on Friday's show: 'one game at a time'.

Also joining us on "The Hook with Norman James", Knights legendary trainer, Don Brankley. Andrew called in from BC, Branks was in Muskoka during our discussion. He says it was an absolute pleasure to return to action for Eurocan Cup, but that's it. I wondered if he felt he made a mistake retiring from the game he loves so much? Some people do. They realize the relaxing life isn't for them. Don's doesn't believe so. He's happy in retirement, but equally happy when answering the call to return for special events. And especially happy if he gets a chance to work with some of the kids who went from boys to men to pros on his watch.

Oh, Branks also says any extra pressure on the junior hockey player of today comes from mom and dad first. As if there isn't enough weight on the shoulders of these kids?

So.. uh... that's 12... uh... shows down for "The... uh... Hook with Norman James".

Y'all come back now, ya hear!! Listen at http://am980.ca/ Friday at 8:00pm

Leafs top 5, 6 in the East?

...Brian Duff of the NHL Network isn't ruling it out. He also agrees with me that another team in Toronto, and not Hamilton, would be the best thing for any future NHL relocation and/or expansion. Now time to convince the Leafs.. lol

Brian Duff knows his hockey. It was a pleasure to have him on "The Hook with Norman James".

Michael Faulds stopped by after the 9:00 pm hour on Friday's show. In his 5th and final year of Canadian University Football Mike wants to go out on top. Along the way the QB stud can break a National passing record, win a 3rd straight Yates Cup, another Mitchell Bowl and a Hec Crighton trophy. He'll definitely be in the mix for all of those, but it's stuff he may not consider enough if he can't find a way to get his team past the mighty Rouge Et Or in late November.

Even if Mike doesn't win a National Championship, he'll certainly find success in life. He's a confident, intellectual, poised individual who represents himself well...both on and off the football field.

Saturday on "The Hook with Norman James" : Don Brankley and Andrew Bucholtz.

Don will talk about his life in Jr. hockey, close to 40 years on the Knights' bench as head trainer. He's seen a lot during his time in London. It's never a bad time to pick that guy's brain.

Plus more on CIS football with Andrew. He's a major contributor to http://www.cisblog.ca/, a terrific site that covers all things Canadian University sports. I want to help raise the profile of our Canadian University athletes, something Andrew and his crew have been doing for a while now. We'll get his ideas and insights on the upcoming OUA season. Geez, it's almost here.

Stangs/Gee-Gee's tomorrow, 5PM in Ottawa. Hmmm... at home in week 1 with a new, fired up Quarteback at the helm. Can 10th ranked Ottawa pull off the upset over Western? It's not impossible.

Listen to "The Hook with Norman James" - 5:30pm at http://am980.ca/
